Real Cities Network Expands with Addition of MediaNews Group Properties
The Real Cities Network, the nation's largest network of local news websites, has expanded its network with the addition of 51 websites owned and operated by MediaNews Group (http://www.medianewsgroup.com), the fourth-largest newspaper company in the United States. MediaNews Group operates 82 local newspaper websites nationwide, and these latest additions complement the 31 MediaNews Group websites already in the Real Cities Network.
Operated by McClatchy Interactive, a division of The McClatchy Company (NYSE: MNI), the Real Cities Network includes websites owned by some of the nation's largest media corporations, including Belo Corp., Cox Newspapers Inc., Hearst Corp., The McClatchy Company, Media General, Scripps and others. The partnership with MediaNews Group expands the Real Cities Network of more than 1,500 websites nationwide.
The newly added MediaNews Group websites originate in California, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and several New England states and include such popular sites as dailybreeze.com (Los Angeles); santacruzsentinel.com (Santa Cruz, Calif.); greenwichcitizen.com (Greenwich Conn.); lowellsun.com (Lowell, Mass.); benningtonbaner.com (Bennington, Vt.); and lc-sun-news.com (Las Cruces, N.M.). These properties join distinguished MediaNews Group properties already affiliated with Real Cities such as LA.com, mercurynews.com (San Jose, Calif.), and elpasotimes.com (El Paso, Texas). The enhanced Real Cities Network will now reach more than 44 million unique visitors each month (Source: Nielsen//NetRatings, June 2007).
"This partnership further propels us toward our goal of expanding our network's reach across all markets," said David Fitzpatrick, vice president of sales for Real Cities. "The addition of these MediaNews Group sites gives Real Cities further reach and penetration with valued, established brands. Another benefit for us is an overall increased ability to deliver regional buys."
In addition to local news websites, MediaNews Group operates four vertical websites focusing on niche markets such as travel, entertainment, automobiles and real estate. The Real Cities Network has a strong presence in these categories, and the addition of these sites will solidify visibility in the communities served by these vertical sites.
"Real Cities is a critical extension of our sales force," said John Hoeft, vice president of sales for MediaNews Group Interactive. "The MNGi Network of sites is continuing to grow, and the Real Cities Network makes it easier for larger, national accounts to buy our local sites."
With the latest enhancement to the Real Cities Network, advertisers have even greater flexibility in targeting readers of online news sites. They can place local, regional or national media buys through one order, one bill and one cost per thousand impressions.
