HealthWorks 101: Health Care Basics

Published: June 13, 2005

Welcome to HealthWorks University. This is the first of a series of educational presentations for employees about health care and the upcoming changes to our medical plans for 2006.

The topics presented today will include an overview of the different types of health care plans available in the marketplace. We will define some of the key terms used by the health care plans, talk about how two types of plans -- HMO and PPO -- operate, and discuss prescription drug coverage. Finally, we will look at some examples so you can see how health care benefits typically work in HMO and PPO plans. As you know from previous communications, under Aetna, we will be offering an HMO-like plan and two other PPO plans, one of which is referred to as a high deductible or routine care plan.

The information we are presenting today will apply to many plans. They may not mirror the plan design you currently have, and we will not be discussing the specific plan designs in our new Aetna plans. We hope, however, that after this presentation, you will have a better understanding of how these types of plans work so that when we introduce the details of our Aetna plan designs, they will make more sense and you will have a better idea of what questions to ask. Finally, we will end with a short discussion on what you should consider when selecting your health care plan.
