Tom Cullinan Named Publisher of The Fresno Bee
SACRAMENTO, Calif. The McClatchy Company (NYSE:MNI) today named Tom Cullinan as president and publisher of The Fresno Bee. His appointment is effective immediately.
Cullinan, a 28-year Fresno Bee employee, has been the newspaper's vice president of circulation since 2000 and has served as interim publisher since November, when former publisher William H. Fleet left the paper.
"Tom is a natural fit to lead The Fresno Bee," said Pat Talamantes, McClatchy's president and CEO. "He is an accomplished newspaper executive who has been instrumental in The Fresno Bee's transition from a print-based enterprise to one that now publishes to a variety of print and digital platforms. We're looking forward to seeing The Fresno Bee's evolution continue under Tom's capable stewardship."
Cullinan, 61, first joined The Fresno Bee in 1984 as a circulation manager. He became circulation director in 1991 and was named vice president of circulation in 2000.
From 1992 to 2007, Cullinan oversaw 15 consecutive years of circulation growth. This past year, he led the effort to introduce the paper's digital subscription program, called Fresno Bee Plus.
"Tom has deep roots in this community and a record of strong leadership and success at The Fresno Bee. He's the perfect candidate to lead the newspaper at this important time," said Bob Weil, McClatchy vice president, operations, who himself served as The Fresno Bee's publisher from 1994 to 1997.
Cullinan is a second-generation circulation executive. Born and raised in Detroit, Cullinan's father worked as a circulation director for the old Detroit Times and later for the Detroit Free Press. Cullinan began his own newspaper career at the Detroit Free Press in 1969, starting in production but moving to circulation where he rose through the ranks before joining The Fresno Bee in 1984.
"I am honored to lead such a dedicated group of employees and I feel fortunate to be working with a top-notch senior management team," Cullinan said. "This is an exciting time for our industry as we build on the success of our print product to offer new digital options for readers to engage us whenever and wherever they choose."
Over his career in Fresno, Cullinan has been particularly active in The Fresno Bees annual Kids Day fundraiser for Children's Hospital Central California. The paper has raised more than $5 million for the hospital since launching the fundraising effort in 1987.
Cullinan is married to Joanne Cullinan. The couple have two adult children and six grandchildren.
