Extraordinary Journalism

May was a month of challenge for so many of the communities we serve – and our newsrooms met these moments by delivering on our promise to be fast and accurate when news breaks, to offer perspective through our opinion journalism, and to connect readers with information needed to make the smart decisions amid uncertainty.

Fort Worth provided its North Texas audience with news updates and explanatory journalism after the worst mass school shooting in state history unfolded in Uvalde. Wichita reacted quickly when a tornado struck nearby, giving readers information about their homes, their neighbors and the scope of the damage. Charlotte and Raleigh showed how people are being squeezed out of the housing market by big investors buying the American Dream and renting it back. And across the country, McClatchy’s newsrooms held the powerful to account, including trusted teachers in Sacramento and a boss who refused to pay employees in Boise.
